The Hiring Process
At Shopify, we strive to find and hire the best talent. We want every candidate to feel comfortable throughout our interview process, and you'll find our interviews are more like conversations than interrogations. We want you to feel like you can be 100% yourself throughout our interview process (and every day at work after that).
We take hiring very seriously and want to ensure that both the role and Shopify are a good match for you. If at the end of the interview process we find there's a great fit, you'll hit the ground running from day one. If you have any questions about what to expect from our hiring process, feel free to reach out to one of our recruiters.
The Life Story
Everyone interviewing at Shopify will do what’s called a “Life Story” interview. In this interview, we’ll be looking to find out more about the things you’ve done in your life, the decisions you’ve made, what you’re passionate about, and the path you’ve taken to bring you here today.
We want to get to know the real you (not the “interview version” of you), so we won’t be asking you what your weaknesses are or taking notes on a clipboard. Since this interview is about your experiences, you don’t have to come prepared with anything. It will be a genuine, two-sided conversation where we get to learn about your values, your career, side projects, volunteer work, self-taught skills and what you want to do next. We’ll start from a point of time in the past of your choice (like what you wanted to be when you grew up, or what your first job was) and work our way through to today.
This interview will help us get to know more about you and your work, and we hope that you get to know a bit more about us too.
Before You Head In
For more information about individual office locations, check out our “Visiting the Office” tab. When you come in for interviews at the office, don’t stress about what to wear - our attire is casual. Dress in anything you’re comfortable in (just as long as you don’t show up in your birthday suit). During the interview process, you will have the opportunity to get in touch with our Accessibility team to let them know if you have any questions or concerns. They’re happy to help with anything from identifying the location of gender neutral washrooms, to potential preferences of elevators vs. stairs, and any other accommodations that you may need during your visit. Lastly, if you are scheduled to have lunch during a day of meetings, it will be provided at the office. We offer vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free options daily in Ottawa. If you are traveling to Montreal, Toronto or Waterloo and have any special dietary needs, please let your Recruiter or Coordinator know.
